Surveys show men do not prefer blondes

Surveys show men do not prefer blondes

A new study adds weight to the belief that men prefer the 'girl next door' to platinum blonde pin-ups - unless they're out on the town.

Research just released appears to disprove what women have long believed - that men prefer blondes. A study by the London’s University of Westminster and recently reported by the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology suggests that men view brunettes as being more attractive and intelligent than blondes. Unless, of course, we're out on the town.

Researchers sent a woman to three London nightclubs with her hair dyed either brunette, blond or red and observed the results. They then asked 130 men to rate pictures of her sporting all three looks. The result? She was chatted up most frequently when she had blond hair but rated higher for attractiveness and intelligence when she had the appearance of being brunette.

This appears to support the results of a survey conducted by dating network Badoo in 2011, which revealed that men prefer brunettes to blondes.

Badoo asked 2000 British blokes to state the physical features they find most attractive in the opposite sex.

Contradicting the old adage that gentlemen prefer blondes, almost a third of the men polled (33.1 percent) said they find women with brown hair most attractive. Blondes (29.5 percent) edged out women with black hair (28.6 percent) for second place while redheads were preferred by a meagre 8.8 percent of the men surveyed.

Women with blue eyes still rule the roost with a massive 40.2 percent of guys preferring blue eyes over brown (29.2 percent), hazel (13.1 percent) and green (17.5 percent).

The survey also uncovered another slightly surprising result: 38.8 percent of the respondents said their perfect woman would have a dress size of 12-14. Only 10 percent of the guys surveyed cited sizes 6-8 as their preference, suggesting that, while skinny models fill the majority of pages in magazines, the man in the street is actually more attracted to women of average build.

International preferences

Badoo also ran the study in France, Spain, Italy, US and Brazil with surprising results.

French men said they preferred their women skinny with all other nationalities saying they prefer average to curvy women. In all of the countries surveyed (apart from the UK), black was the most popular hair colour. The UK was also the only country that opted for blue eyes, with brown and green topping the table around the world.

Lloyd Price, from Badoo UK, said, "I was amazed that blond hair and size 8 did not top the list. Magazines are full of skinny blond models, so it is nice to see that in reality guys prefer the girl-next-door look."

I am a strawberry blonde- always have been and a size 8, I hate the stigma I get at times even when my partner calls me a wranger for fun! As for the size 8 I often get comments from other 'fat' peeps about my size but naturaly have a small frame and high metabolism. So come on guys it's who you are inside that counts. I do have to admit though what is with all the peroxide with wannabe blondes natural is best just be yourself. I wouldn't change my mans looks for the world he looks yummy just the way he is and hasnt even got much hair!
Im a blonde and thats because it suits me, girls don't dye their hair for male attention - thats just shallow, guys should like a girl for who they are not what hair colour they have, and the stereotypical dumb blonde may exist but there are also dumb brunettes and dumb redheads! hair turns grey anyway!
I'm a natural redhead and get stereotyped as a kind of seductress (like Christina Hendricks). But meh I don't get the "dumb" coments that blondes do or the "plain" that brunettes get. I always stand out and people don't forget me because of my hair. So I'm cool withe it
I have natural blond hair, and while I am quite pleased to see that men don't go the stereotypical 'blond bombshells', I find the stereotypes atrocious. "brunettes have more common sense than blondes and a little more class. Blondes tend to rely purely on looks .." What even is that. How can you say that? As I stated before, I'm a natural blond. I don't find it necessary to dress up like a ***. Blondes aren't the only ones who dress in skimpy clothes. It's just the women who dye their hair platinum blond and cake the make up on that creates the stereotype. "Brown hair is feral and brunettes know it, obviously better than men do!" Brown hair is not 'feral.' Some of the most beautiful women in the world have brown hair. So please, before you make an idiotic comment, remember not to rely on stereotypes.
Notice how the article said guys approached more girls in nightclubs yet find Brunettes more attractive? Guys approach blondes because they are statistically the easiest to chat up and more likely to sleep with you on the first night. Blondes are great for casual sex but a real relationship requires a Brunette obviously when guys are ready to settle down. Another thing - I doubt any guy would realize how fat a size 14 is.. as mentioned above we don't know there sizes! Give me a 10 anyday.
I have blonde hair but its not to attract male attention its because it suits me! Majority of women do not colour their hair for male attention! A lot of men need to give women more credit, I don't and I know my girl friends do not make chooses based on what we think men like! I am happily married and I believe one of the reasons why our marriage works so well is because we are individuals!
Brown hair is feral and brunettes know it, obviously better than men do! Men only like brown hair coz its reminds them of the girl-next-door or their mums and sisters. What happened to the times where men only wanted woman who were strong, healthy and intelligence regardless of their hair colour. Statistically, redheads followed by NATURAL blondes are more intelligent and fertile than all the rest.
brunettes have more common sense than blondes and a little more class. Blondes tend to rely purely on looks ..
I really don't think women dye their hair for men it's more for themselves! I personnel agree that its quite amusing women dying their hair blonde particularly when the dark roots show and they've been trying to convince you that they are natural blondes. Natural black hair with brown eyes is the sexiest does it for me.
Most men don't know a womens dress size. They envision size six as annorexic because that's what the media dictates. If you take a man into a room, get a group of women from size six to fourteen walk by him, he will pick the size six to eight girl any day of the week. He might not know her size, but he knows she looks like a cute accessory and she doesn't challenge his manly appearance and dominance of the relationship. The reason blondes are less appealing is simply due to supply and demand. Blonde, blue eyed women rule the pages of mens mags, making a brunette women in the magazine stand out more. If it was reversed and brunette ruled the pages, blonde would appeal. It's human nature, we want what we cannot have.
